Days before the start of the 1974-75 season, word reached us that 30-year-old Francis Lee might be available for £100,000 at Manchester City, where manager Tony Book considered that the player’s best days were in the past. 

Age meant nothing to Dave Mackay, however, and he reminded me of how his move to Derby at veteran status had rejuvenated his career. In his opinion, Franny guaranteed class and quality, and could add to the medals he had won at Maine Road.

“We’ve got to get up to Manchester as soon as possible, Stuart, and talk to Franny,” he said. But would Lee come to Derby? Well, we’d just got into Europe and felt that was the ace up our sleeve. We arrived at a restaurant near Franny’s…
